How Long is a Fire Pump’s Lifespan?
Fire pumps are an integral part of a facility’s ability to fight a fire. They ensure that the fire sprinkler system has adequate water pressure. These systems are pricey, but they do have a relatively long life expectancy. A fire pump’s lifespan is approximately 20-25 years and they can operate this long with the proper maintenance plan. Similarly, fire pump control’s lifecycle is 20-25 years but there are a few factors that can reduce its lifecycle.
How to Maximize Fire Pump’s Lifespan?
Performing regular fire pump maintenance is the key to meeting or exceeding the average fire pump’s life expectancy. During routine inspections and testing, technicians check pressure gauges, operation of the casing relief valve, automatic air release valve and ensure the pump is greased as required by the manufacturer’s specifications. Over time, the fire pump’s packing, bearings, gland bolts/nuts, shaft sleeves, and casing rings will require adjustments and or preventative replacements. In addition to maximizing your fire pump’s lifespan, preventative maintenance will also save you money on costly fire pump repairs and replacements.
Fire Pump Controller Replacement
A Fire pump controller’s lifecycle is typically 20-25 years. Some factors that affect its lifespan include atmospheric conditions and replacement part availability. Atmospheric conditions that are wet or have a high concentration of salt in the air, like coastal areas, create a corrosive environment for fire pump controllers. These conditions reduce the controller’s lifecycle by 25% when compared to those in noncorrosive environments. The manufacturer’s production of models and parts also affects a controller’s lifespan. Typically, a model’s production occurs over a span of 10 years. When manufacturers discontinue a model, it can make obtaining replacement parts for repairs difficult. Unfortunately, this may cause a facility to replace its fire pump controller.
Both fire pumps and fire pump controls have a 20-25-year lifecycle. By performing regular maintenance, fire pumps can remain fully functional for many years. Unfortunately, certain atmospheric conditions and lack of replacement parts can cut a fire pump controller’s lifespan short. Since fire pumps are expensive to replace it’s critical to take steps to help ensure they meet their lifespan expectancy.
