Fire Pump Requirements
In the event of a fire, fire pumps provide water pressure to a facility’s fire sprinkler system. Some facilities either have an electric or diesel fire pump. Electric fire pumps have disconnects that will transfer power if the service is lost and in some cases may have diesel fire pumps as backups. Diesel fire pumps run on fuel which is regularly checked and filled. Fire pump assemblies include the water supply suction, discharge piping, and valving.

Fire Pump Testing
Fire pumps require two different types of tests at different intervals, a no-flow test and an annual flow test.
Fire Pump No-Flow Test

- Pump operates properly without flowing water

Fire Pump Annual Flow
- Required annually
- Verifies pump performance during different conditions

Fire Pump Maintenance
Fire pumps and their associated components are essential to a properly functioning fire protection system. A comprehensive fire pump preventive maintenance program will increase the reliability of the system as well as reduce or eliminate costly repairs. NFPA 25, the Standard for Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems requires that a “preventive maintenance program is initiated immediately after the pump assembly has passed acceptance tests.”
