Think of the best turkey you ever had, it was probably crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. Those in search of the most delicious turkey are sacrificing their safety not to mention their health for flavor by deep frying their Thanksgiving Day turkey. You don’t have to take my word for it check out this entertaining yet informative video starring William Shatner, who burned himself while deep frying a turkey https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=EYkRF_FmD40. My deepest apologies to all the Star Trek fans who were expecting this short film to be set in space. But in all seriousness, according to State Farm, “more cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving than any other day.” Aside from avoiding turkey fryers, here’s a Thanksgiving Day Fire Prevention list:
- Clean your stove, oven, and or grill before use
- If cooking, avoid wearing dangling jewelry or loose fitted clothing
- Turn pot handles inward
- Keep items that could catch fire away from stove tops, grills, or candles
- DO NOT use water to put out a grease fire
- Keep a fire extinguisher within 10ft. from the cooking area
- Smoke detectors should be located on every level of the house, bedrooms, and in the hallways outside the bedrooms
- Check to make sure smoke detectors are in working condition
